The Westminster High girls soccer team scored two late goals to pull away from Ocean View for a4-2 win in a Golden West League game on Jan. 18, at Westminster High.
It was the first meeting between the league co-champions from last year. Westminster led 2-1 at halftime, but Ocean View tied the game early in the second half on a goal by Leah Marsh. The game remained tied until the 22nd minute, when a corner kick was headed into the goal by Vanessa Campos, which proved to be the game-winner.
Late in the game, Campos would add an assist as she fed a pass across the goal to her sister Michelle Campos for a shot that gave the Lions the 4-2 lead. Ocean View had taken a 1-0 lead early in the game, but the Lions tied it up on a shot from 35 yards out by Kelly Almazan that tied it up.
When the Seahawks were called for a foul in the box later in the half, Sarah Ralston converted the penalty kick to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. Ralston also had an assist, as did Sophia Nguyen and Ashley Orduno. Goalie Zaydee Solis was credited with six saves.
Aside from a few quick attacks, the Lions were able to control the ball much of the time and keep Ocean View on the defensive.
“We were able to lay well most of the time,” Head Coach Tim Boyd said.
The Lions remained tied atop the league standings with Santa Ana, both at 3-0-1.
