Oxford Academy advanced to the CIF championship game for the first time in program history. The Lady Patriots had lost in the semifinals the past three seasons but managed to get over the hurdle this time with a convincing 60-29 victory over Santa Margarita. Oxford extended its win streak to 16 games and moves on to the finals vs. #1 seed Lakeside of Lake Elsinore who defeated Flintridge Prep 60 -51.
Lakeside is led by Sr. Guard and UC Berkeley commit Jazlen Green and comes into the game with a record of 25-3. Oxford will counter the Lancers with a starting line-up that is experienced, and battle tested led by three Sr. starters Austyn Masuno, Angie Gagnon, and Mylee Madrazo who have started 17 CIF playoff games each in their career, while. Jr. Forward Brianna Rodriguez has 12 career playoff games under her belt and Sophomore Point Guard Angie Choi has another 9 playoff starts. In addition, Masuno delivers in big games as she has scored 2,300 career points and 343 of those have been in playoff games.
The Div. 2A CIF-SS championship game is Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Colony High in Ontario.
Past Week Game Recaps – Southern Section Div. 2A CIF Playoffs
Wednesday vs. St. Mary Academy (26-3 and #2 seed) in the quarterfinals. Oxford defeated the Belles 53-51, in a game Oxford led from the midway point in the first quarter until the finish. The Lady Patriots had a 44-32 lead going into the 4th quarter but had to hold on as St. Mary’s had a 3-point shot bounce off the rim as the final buzzer sounded. Masuno scored 21, Choi had 12, Madrazo 8, Rodriguez 6, and Gagnon added 5.
Friday at Santa Margarita (20-9) in the semifinals. Oxford defeated the Eagles 60-29 behind a stellar performance by Austyn Masuno who scored 30, grabbed 20 rebounds and had 6 assists. The Eagles were keeping it close early in the 2nd quarter at 13-10, before the Lady Patriots turned up the heat and went on a 16-1 run to end the half with a 29-11 lead. Brianna Rodriguez and Angie Choi both added 12 points.
Oxford Academy is led by Sr. Center Austyn Masuno (21.1 pts and 10.7 rebounds, 2-time Academy League MVP who has scored over 2,300 points in her prep career), Soph. Pt Guard Angie Choi (13.5 pts, 4.3 assists, 3.5 steals), Sr. Guard Angie Gagnon (7.2 pts, 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 steals, 2.4 assists), Sr. Guard Mylee Madrazo (8.2 pts), Jr. Forward Brianna Rodriguez (7.1 pts, 5.0 rebounds.)
